An individual originally from the city of Nizhnevartovsk, Russia, has been accused of hacking a Play Station 3 console with the aim of installing unauthorized software. Apparently, someone paid the defendant to install the pirate programs on the device developed by Sony.
According to the lawsuit, imposed at the end of 2019, the individual modified the original console software using a desktop computer, some malware variants and other files created in order to inhibit the security mechanisms on the console, a job for which he received an unrevealed amount of money.
Although they seem like a common practice, these actions violate the Russian Federation’s Law on “information technologies and data protection,” a specialist in the field mentions.
The resident of Nizhnevartovsk is accused of committing crimes under Section 272(2) (illegal access to information on a legally protected computer resulting in the destruction and modification of computer information) and Section 273(2) (deliberate use of software for the purpose of destroying or modifying information without authorization) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
For these offences the accused faces a sentence of up to five years in prison, mention specialists. The defendant is waiting to hear his sentence.
